Just a few photos from around the farm and the bee yards. In addition to the garden flowers, we're lucky to have a lot of important natives growing in the wild. Honey bees can't access all our native flowers because they evolved in different ecosystems in Europe and Asia, but our native bees thrive on them, and I consider the native bees equally important to protect and support.
We have two large patches of milkweed on the farm that we preserve for pollinators. In addition to monarchs and many types of butterflies, the hummingbird moth is a native species taking full advantage of this important plant. If you can do only one thing to help pollinators, plant some milkweed in your yard!
Would you like to learn more about these wonderful insects? Here's a few links to new research and plain old observations showing us a bit more about bees' intelligence, social order and creativity.
